Weekly Eats {Intro to Kohlrabi & Greek Festival}

Posted on June 25, 2013 by Achieve with Athena

Greetings from Hotlanta!  It’s definitely hot here, but apparently home was hotter yesterday?  I’ll definitely take the heat over other types of weather.  Last time I was in Atlanta for work in March it was actually snowing and everyone blamed the weather on us.  Yesterday was a pretty non-eventful travel day, which is a good thing!  Pretty standard: flight > lunch > couple hours at work > gym > dinner > healthy snack stock up trip at Trader Joe’s > blog > sleep.  Today I’m rolling out our Stress Management seminar to the Atlanta folks, so I hope they like it!

Just wanted to check in to share my eats from last week.  The highlights anyways!

Weekly Eats

On Sunday we prepped a ginormous chicken salad (sans mayo of course) that kept for the week and made up several different lunches.

I had wraps a couple of days.

Chicken salad wraps

And salads the other days.

Chicken Salad on Greens with Kohlrabi

This salad in particular was amazing because I used the butter lettuce (I think that’s what it was!) that we got in last week’s farm share.  I topped it with the chicken salad, avocado slices, tomato slices, slivered almonds, and raisins.  AND my new discovery, kohlrabi.

Kohlrabi

This kohlrabi was also part of the farm share, but I had no idea what it was when I took it out of the bag at home.  I had to text Dawn and Sheila a picture of it asking them to explain what to do with it.  If you are also wondering what the heck kohlrabi is, it looks like an onion but is in the cabbage family I think.  You can cut it up like one but you eat it raw.  I had plain as a snack like I would carrots, and I also enjoyed it for an extra crunch on my salads.  It’s fun to try new things!

Our dinners last week were as follows:

Sunday
Late lunch / dinner at Michael’s Harborside Restaurant for Father’s Day.  I ordered swordfish topped with pineapple mango salsa, asparagus, and a side of rice.  It was a good meal, but I must admit that Tim’s pineapple salsa is actually better!

Monday
Roasted peppercorn pasta salad, one of our go to easy weeknight dinners.

Tuesday
Fish tacos!  We bought cod and topped with pico de gallo, avocado, and a spin on tartar sauce.  We made it with Greek yogurt, spicy mustard, honey, dill, and a little s&p.

Wednesday
Another farm share inspired creation!  This time we used up the swiss chard by cooking it into a gnocchi dish along with white beans and diced tomato.  This was seriously delicious and I will be sharing the recipe soon!

Thursday
I went over Shannon’s apartment to work on my Providence College t-shirt quilt, and she kindly treated me to dinner after I sat in traffic for so long.  We had a fun chicken and veggie stir fry with brown rice.  Thank you for dinner, Shannon!

Friday
I ate a lot of snacks and barely any dinner… oops.

Saturday
After wedding dress shopping with Slesh all day in Connecticut, we were STARVING by the time we got home.  Luckily for us, there was a Greek festival going on down the street from my apartment.  Perfect to satisfy how hungry we were if you ask me!

Greek FestivalWe each got a Greek salad and a dolmathes (grape leave), and then we split a chicken souvlaki skewer, a moussaka, a pastitio, and spanakopita.  I love the authentic dishes — so good.  We also each enjoyed a Mythos Greek beer!

Also, just because this is hilarious… how funny is it that the gyro limit is FOUR per person?!

The Greeks really know how to portion control.

Sunday
On Sunday night before my trip Tim wanted to treat me to dinner out on Devlin’s patio.  I ordered one of the dinner specials, grilled scallops in a lobster sauce.  It came with spinach and fingerling potatoes.  So yummy, especially with my white sangria.

Devlin'sFinally, a couple of last things to share.

New snack idea…

Frozen Peanut Butter and Banana Bites

Frozen peanut butter and banana bites.  So simple, right?!  Thank you to Lindsay at The Lean Green Bean for the easy snack suggestion.  Also, Emily recommended dipping in a little chocolate.  I could be down with that.

And finally, a fun dessert treat I enjoyed last Sunday while watching the next Food Network star.

Blackberry peach pie

Blackberry peach pie with nothing healthified whatsoever about it.  I enjoyed every last bite.

This week’s eats are mainly going to be in Atlanta.  Last time I was here I enjoyed every single meal I ate, and we already started the week off with a delicious meal at Seasons 52 last night.  Can’t wait to share them all with you in next week’s Weekly Eats post!

Anyone try any new or different foods last week?  Ever try kohlrabi before?  Any Atlanta readers out there have any recommendations for me in the Buckhead area?

Have a terrific Tuesday!
