Halloween Themed Workouts

Happy Halloween!

On Tuesday night, in true Liz and Athena fashion, we held a Two A Day Tuesday holiday theme class for Halloween.

What does a Halloween Two A Day involve, you might ask?

First, dressing up as Thing 1 and Thing 2 from Dr. Seuss.

Halloween: Thing 1 & Thing 2

Gotta love a workout conducive costume! Plus, how perfect is this for the two of us? PLUS, how perfect is it that included in my latest batch of New Balance gear were red sneakers? Love it!

Liz was pretty limited in making a themed playlist since she has a limited repertoire of songs to choose from for Kix, but she did her best!

Halloween: Kix

She also passed out glow in the dark bracelets in her class so we could do our last routine in the dark.

Halloween: Glow in the Dark

In my class, I used the same Halloween playlist that I used last year:

I also made everyone in my class go “trick or treating” for the workout. I wrote out twenty something moves on small pieces of paper, and put each piece of paper in a bag. Everyone took a turn picking a move out of the bag, and whatever exercise was selected we did for 60 seconds.

Halloween: Interval

At the end of each class, Liz and I handed out orange and black beads, along with “pumpkintines.” Pumpkintines are clementines decorated as pumpkins with a sharpie or dry erase marker, and they were a huge hit last year. So we brought them back.

I was a little disappointed by how few people dressed up this year, but I want to give a special shout out to Mary and Steph who totally rocked their costumes with Liz and I, and a few others who made the attempt with orange and black outfits.

Halloween: Gym

Oh well. We still had fun with it!!

This morning was Halloween at the gym round two. I had my 6am class, but I didn’t encourage costume wearing since that time of day would be a little aggressive for costumes, don’t you think? I did wear orange and black though (as did Steph and Mary AGAIN, thank you ladies), and I used the same playlist. I also taught a different Halloween inspired workout that I named “Halloween SPOOKY Sets” instead of supersets and tried to make all my exercises holiday related. I must say that I think I did a good job, even though some were a huge stretch.

Halloween Spooky Sets

If there’s anything to take away from this post, it’s clearly that I get cooler by the day.

ANYWAYS! Tonight Tim and I are hosting a Halloween dinner for Slesh, Will, Bridget, and Dave. It will involve more dorky holiday themes. I’m excited for it!

What are your Halloween plans? Did anybody teach or take any Halloween themed workouts this week?

FitHouse: Review, Giveaway, and Discounts!

I recently had the pleasure of trying a new class at a local fitness studio, FitHouse.

FitHouse offers cycling, resistance, weight training, and yoga classes. When the studio contacted me to see if I’d be interested in trying any of their offerings, I was drawn to their FitBurn class description:

“Challenge your entire body with our resistance heavy class. Lift, tone, and burn fat through high repetition and specified isometric movements. Build lean muscle, not bulk!”

Totally me, huh?

When I arrived at the studio, I immediately fell in love with its vibe. It just looked different from any other studio or gym I’ve been in before. I know “cool” isn’t a very descriptive word, but that’s honestly what this place is. Super cool and hip. I’m surprised they invited ME.

Here’s a fun panoramic shot:

FitHouse: Panorama Train Room

As you can see, FitHouse has a really modern and open space for their training classes, with the equipment lined up on the side of the room. I got excited by all the fun toys to choose from!

At the far end of the studio is a separate spinning room. FitHouse offers five different types of cycle classes: House Ride, Boston Ride, Energy Ride, Xpress Energy Ride, and HouseFusion. I’m heading back this Saturday to try a House Ride class in the morning. I haven’t taken cycle in some time, so I’m pumped.

Next to the cycle studio is also a smaller space for one on one training.

Fithouse: Training

My favorite parts of the studio were the big words (FitHouse’s slogan) underneath the mirrors, as well as the resistance band hooks at the back of the studio. I really enjoyed the band work we did on those during the class!

I am also a huge loser and snapped pictures of the locker room. Compared to the Y’s, this locker room is luxury!

And has fun inspiring and motivational quotes on the walls:

At the front desk, there is also a small studio “store.” They had so many cute tops! Maybe I’ll get one this weekend when I’m back.

FitHouse Clothes

The FitBurn class I took was taught by studio owner, Britt Vitello, who was super nice and welcoming. I wouldn’t necessarily call her “nice” as she taught though, which is a good thing and a sign of an effective instructor in my book! 😉

The workout, although only 45 minutes, left my legs and shoulders burning. We did a ton of stuff so I could experience a bit of everything, which I appreciated. We used yoga balls, Pilates rings, bands, bars, and mats.

Some of my favorite moves included:

  • 180 degree jump squats with hands touching the ground each time
  • Wall squat series with yoga balls (which I stole for Week 4 of Fall Into Fitness!)
  • Resistance band work: chest flies, shoulder raises, rear delts, and those SITUPS!

I wish FitHouse was just a TEENY bit closer to where I live so I could take their classes more often. However, I am excited to take my spin class this weekend and drop in from time to time moving forward. Their rates are very reasonable ($16 for a single training class and $20 for a single cycle class), and even better for the more classes you sign up for. I will definitely be back. You guys know how much I love workout buddies, so let me know if you want to go together!

Monday Motivation: Make it Count

Last week was definitely a quality over quantity kind of week for my workouts.  I only exercised four days instead of my usual five, but each workout left me really sore so I can’t complain!

Weekly Workouts

Last Week’s Workouts

I ran the Oaktoberfest 5k race with my dad, Tim, and my cousin Dean.  I ran hard, so my legs/hips were really feeling it for a few days.

Oaktoberfest 5k

Monday was my “I don’t want to go to the gym day,” but I ended up doing this 35 minute upper body workout.  Holy DOMS!

35 Minute Upper Body Blast

Two A Day!  I took Liz’s Kickboxing class, then taught a lower body supersets format in my class afterwards.  Was anyone else really feeling it in their legs last week after class?  I definitely was.

Active rest — walk at lunch

Taught my class in the morning with isometric hold sets.  I haven’t done that type of format in a while!

Active rest – walking around Portsmouth

This Week’s Workouts

Here’s this week’s plan:

  • Sunday:  Hike in Portsmouth
  • Monday: Tonight I will either be going to Cardio Cutz if I can leave work early enough OR I will be doing a treadmill workout
  • Tuesday:  Halloween Two A Day!  Class members, please wear a costume and come ready for prizes and Halloween fun!  Don’t let Liz and I be the only ones dressed up. 🙂
  • Wednesday: Rest day or TBD
  • Thursday:  Teaching my morning class.  No costumes on Halloween because costumes at 6am is a little aggressive, but be prepared for a Halloween themed “butts and guts” class.
  • Friday: Rest day or TBD
  • Saturday: Heading back to FitHouse to try a cycle class.  Can’t wait!

Monday Motivation

I posted this question on my F&F Facebook page this morning, but I want to ask here as well.  What do you struggle with most when it comes to healthy living?  Is it diet or exercise, or is it something else like getting enough sleep, managing stress levels, maintaining healthy relationships, etc.?

Whatever it might be, what small steps will you take this week to help yourself overcome some of those struggles?  Breaking those lofty areas into smaller, more manageable steps makes them seem more achievable!

difference between your body this week and next week is what you do for the next seven days to acheive your goals

It’s a new week, you guys.  Make it count.

How will you make this week count?
