Reader Focus Week, Day 3: What Do You Do?

Hello! Today is day three of my reader focus week.

Reader Focus Week

On Monday I had you guys introduce yourselves, and yesterday I had you tell me what blogs you follow and sites you read. Today I want to know about what you do for work. Some of you may have talked about this when introducing yourselves on Monday, but if not, that’s what today is for.

Some commenting prompts if you’re feeling stuck:

What fills your 9-5?

Do you have a full-time job? A part-time job? Both?

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Are you passionate about what you do now?

If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?

What is a job you would never want to do, no matter how much money it involved?

Something I am especially interested in reading about today is whether or not the companies you work for have a worksite wellness program. This is what I do full-time, and I’m looking to connect with some of you to pick your brains on what your companies offer for corporate wellness programming. If this is something you’d be able to talk to me about, especially if your employers offer on site fitness classes for staff, please please please leave a comment today!

Hope you are all having a wonderful week. 🙂

  1. I’m a civil Engineer for a bridge contractor, which is typically way more hours than the usual 9-5.

Growing up I wanted to be a writer or a historian, and I still do, so no I am not passionate about what I do, but it gets me by.

My dream job would be a writer or something else I could do in pjs.

Any job involving long hours. I know I work them now, but I took a massive cut in pay to be able to work closer to a 50 hour work week. Anything over that and I’m not a happy camper.

My company/industry has a wellness program. We are part of an association in our state (state wide) that provides one. You can call for free counselling, they have discounts at local gyms, money back on healthcare for doctor visits, and self assessments and we just got a coordinator this year that is available to us at any time. My boss is a big proponent of it so we get told to use it/take assessments during work hours.

    • I love the “something else I could do in pjs” comment. I seriously look forward to my work from home day every week just so I can stay in my pajamas all day. How sad.

For your wellness program, does your company offer fitness classes on site? Or just the discounts to local gyms?

      • Just at local gyms. On site is difficult because as a contractor we have offices set up at each project for a year or two then we set up on a different project, and have at least 5 going at any given time. There has been discussion of putting a gym in our new building when/if we ever get one.

  2. I used to be a middle school teacher, then I became a stay-at home mom. Now I’m self employed – we own an event venue and I do all of the cleaning, set up, showings, meetings, advertising…..It is very flexible (some weeks I work way more than others!) and there is definitely a wellness program involved!!! Actually, I’m thinking about starting up a bridal boot camp at the venue in the next month or so!!
Growing up (and through college), I thought I would be a DR -orthopedic surgeon. Instead I got my masters in Sports Medicine and then never used it!!!

  3. I work as a Senior Project Manager in Web Marketing company located in Newton Corner. This is my full time job, and I am hoping to pick up on kickboxing classes as my part time job very soon.

As a child, I wanted to be a singer, but my singing career ended in 5th grade, when my parents kindly told me I am not that good of a singer 🙂 So from there, I started to synchronize swim and to golf.

I love my job now, but I would prefer to move to sport marketing, because this is something I really want to do.

Hmmm, Any job in the world? I think I would want to be a pro golfer, which I was very close to achieving earlier, but picked education instead.

I would never work in cleaning industry or as a lawyer.

Unfortunately, my company doesn’t have a worksite wellness program, but I just recently ordered 4-5 standing desks for people and they loved it, including me. I also made 3 of my coworkers join YMCA, which I am really happy about!I really hope my boss will be more open to it in the future!!

    • YEAH to picking up on kickboxing classes! 😉

Never knew that you were a golfer. How fun!

And good for you for getting the standing desks. Love it. I just got one too, but I don’t use it a ton yet. I alternate between standing and sitting.

  4. Hey Athena!
I work for a Phys Ed/Sports product company doing Merchandising and product selection for our catalog. We are a very healthy minded company, with a lot of focus on childhood obesity, keeping active to stay sharp in school and educational and active afterschool programs.
All of my jobs have been in Wellness for the past 5 years (previous to this) I used to do worksite wellness, and then I did bootcamps and personal training, worked in a healthy food store selling supplements and helping with food plans, and then I did marketing and management for a healthy prepared meals company. My ideal job would definitely be to run my own wellness center with classes of all types, lifestyle coaching and writing nutrition programs.
We don’t have a worksite wellness program necessarily, but we have a very strong employee-led wellness committee. We run challenges throughout the year with activity time, and steps per day, a blood drive, know your numbers testing, we have a team garden, we do wellness reimbursement for races in the area or yoga classes. We have a small fitness center and I teach classes 3x per week during the lunch hour, and we also offer circuit training after work for 2 nights per week, and there are video-led classes in the morning before work. It is free to go to the fitness center, but not open to spouses or family. Also, we do lunch n learns, roughly every quarter. The participation in the challenges is about 30-40% of the company. The lunch n learns get around 10%, and the classes also get about 10%.
Well, I don’t love what I do now, but I love that I can do wellness stuff at a healthy-minded company. I am hopefully going to school for Dietetics starting summer so I can do more with nutrition in the future. I also currently teach classes outside of work 2-4 per week.

Let me know if you have any questions!

    • Hi Lisa, thank you so much for sharing this! It’s so interesting to hear about your wellness background. I am spearheading the wellness initiatives at my company, and one of the things we are looking into offering this year are on site fitness classes. I’m curious to know if the classes are taught by internal staff (sounds like they are if you are running them at lunch) versus if they hire outside sources to come in to teach instead? Do you get paid extra from what you already do? How is liability handled? Would love to connect more, so if it’s easier to email me, please do – I’m at fitnessandfeta@gmail.com. Thank you!

  5. My 7-5 is filled with a desk job—full time, along with school!

I wanted to be a veterinarian, then a cosmetologist, then I had no idea, so here I am!

I am not passionate about what I do now, but I will be in the next few years with a big career change.

If I could have any job in the world, I would own my own dog and horse boarding/training business.

I would never ever want to be a politician.

I love how you’re reaching out to your readers. Thanks!

  6. I’m an athletic trainer, which I love (and which many people confuse with personal trainer — totally different profession!). I work with the women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, and mens/women’s lacrosse teams at a small college, and really love almost everything about it, except for the hectic schedule. I work at least 6 days most weeks, which gets tiring throughout the year, but at least I have all of June and July off to recoup 🙂 If I could have any job in the world? Hmmmm… something where I could spend all day on the beach and/or playing with puppies. Wait, that doesn’t exist? 😉

  7. Hi Athena!
I’m loving these ‘getting to know you!’ posts!
What fills your 9-5? I’m a RN working as a Diabetes Educator and work casually at our local Cardiac Institute working in post-op Cardiac surgery.

Do you have a full-time job? A part-time job? Both? Full time and casual!

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? A nurse-I’m lucky I like it that much!

Are you passionate about what you do now? I love my patients and I love the job itself, but the politics of where I work gets to be a bit much!

If you could have any job in the world, what would it be? I would love to be a nurse with a side of a fitness instructor.

What is a job you would never want to do, no matter how much money it involved? Fitness instructor!

    • I’m glad you are enjoying and participating in these posts! I always see your name on my blog and from my challenges, but never knew you were an RN. So cool. I think politics comes into play with any company, but that’s something I’ve been struggling with a lot, especially around the dynamics of our worksite wellness program. Makes it stressful, which goes AGAINST wellness!

  9. Hi! What fills my 9-5 is working as a Statistics and Quality Management Initiatives Analyst for MEDITECH in support of the Client Services Division, sounds fancy right!

When I was a child I wanted to be in Business and go to lunch meetings, how lame is that! I do really enjoy what I am doing now as it requires me to think analytically which I do enjoy.

Any job in the world? Maybe a professional sailor.. Or a Marketing Analysis/Research job, you know the CMO of some really cool up and coming company.

What is a job you would never want to do, no matter how much money it involved? A lawyer, way to many family members in the field!

  11. I work in Staff Dev as part of the Organizational Development group at the ‘TECH, and that’s all. I’ve considered picking up some waitressing shifts here and there, but then just the thought of it makes me tired and I decide against it. As a kid, I was 100% set on being a doctor from about age 6 until I was a sophomore in college. I had taken several chemistry classes and labs and realized I was never going to stop hating it. This was in the same quarter I took my first psych class which fascinated me, so I changed my major and haven’t looked back! One of my very best friends is a doctor and watching her go through med school confirmed for me that I made the right choice. As lame as it probably sounds to most people, I’m really passionate about what I do. Organizational Development is a perfect blend for me of psychology and business. A lot of people think things like teamwork, leadership, empowerment, etc. are touchy-feely, but they matter and there’s research to prove it. I hope to help people make those connections and understand the HUGE impact of the “soft” stuff in business outcomes and employee well being. If I could have any job, it would probably be pretty similar to this one, but maybe higher up within the organization.
